As usual, an excellent piece by @GeorgeWParker, @JamesBlitz & @PickardJE. A few observations, based on meetings in Bxl over the last several days 1/3

It's a shame @BorisJohnson didn't shift his focus to Bxl immediately after G7 in Biarritz. Could have had more success. Since then, EU appetite for deal has fallen: 1) due to Govt's position on LPF; 2) weaker parliamentary majority & 3) fact that EU side knows election is looming
All will negatively weigh on EU's willingness to move on backstop. Per my earlier thread, small window that presented itself post-Biarritz hasn't shut, but it has definitely gotten smaller

.@EmmanuelMacron is not scared of no deal. He still believes that this has gone on much too long; that the #Brexit debate threatens to derail his own agenda for EU if it drags on through 2020; that it is democratically unsound to want to block or reverse Brexit 2/
that any outcome in which UK remains in EU would now have more downsides than upsides (UK as sullen member; danger that other European nationalists will see the failure of Brexit as a Euro-elite plot; UK’s likely opposition to his ambitions on industrial/defence policy) 3/

Interesting, blue skies thinking by Pete. After meets in Bxl, where is EU now? As I wrote pre-Biarritz, @BorisJohnson did have positive impact in Berlin & Paris. That encouraged small movement on EU side - some tactical, also genuine. Seems to have now been undone by Frost 1/
As one senior EU official says, BJ showed "determination to get a deal done. That's why Merkel moved. If UK wanted a serious, substantive relationship, it would have been easier to allow something on Island of Ireland that wasn't bullet proof. One leak on dike would have been OK"
But @DavidGHFrost seems to have "undercut" the "good impression" Johnson left. Key issue is LPF. Govt argument is not that EU shouldn't expect it in all sectors, but that it won't apply in *any* sector. Yikes. Market access will only be commensurate with LPF provisions 3/

Emerging from lunch in Bxl. So it seems November election likely after all opposition parties agree to delay approving contest until Article 50 extension has been approved at 17-18 European Council. How will @BorisJohnson now honour his pledge not to seek extension? 1/3
Several options under consideration, including: asking Queen not to give Royal Assent to extension Bill; refusing to implement it; asking another EU member state to veto extension; attaching conditions (eg will disrupt EU) that would make EU more reluctant/deny extension or 2/3
passing no-confidence vote in own Govt in hope that leads to election. None of them good options 3/3

As a rule, before I read a paper, I glance at the title, abstract, authors, & the organization publishing. The IMF - led by a European & multilateral - responsible for helping countries w/ fiscal management & capacity building. Legarde was head & now will be the ECB head.
How u read an academic paper: Skim through the title, abstract, look for thesis, look at table of content, go to the back and read the conclusion & then the body. W/o reading the entire paper, the thesis👉🏻 is TO ENABLE DEEP NEGATIVE RATES TO MAINTAIN THE POWER OF MONETARY POLICY.

Over the last several days, I have been following something that has shaken me to my very core. The anger I have felt as a result as caused me to question a LOT of things politically, including my stance as a liberal.
Perhaps a little questioning of the political and social stances I hold is healthy. Most people's views change with time, their individual morals/ethics, and plain old self-interest.
I've been a liberal now about 10 years, after having been raised a Rush Limbaugh-listening, Fox News-watching member of the Right. I left that cesspool of fanaticism before the outright hostility towards Blacks and other minorities started.

Also, they killed an abortion doctor.

Over the last several days, a new hashtag has appeared and propagated on Twitter: #VerifiedHate. The concept seems to be to attack verified (blue-check) accounts that are theoretically promoting hate against white people.
We downloaded recent tweets containing the #VerifiedHate hashtag. We found 18092 tweets from 9747 accounts - the first tweet is in the wee hours of the morning on August 5th, and the hashtag takes off on the evening of August 7th.
This hashtag campaign appears to have been planned on other platforms in two stages. First, we have this post on Gab from 8/5, which is within minutes of the first tweet from @Keque_Magus. It's followed by plenty of additional Gab discussion promoting #VerifiedHate.
