It wasn't just the Labour Party who were angry at Corbyn, the Unionists were apoplectic.

Some members were worried about the security aspects of inviting two convicted (& unrepentant) IRA terrorists into Parliament, who saw MPs as legitimate targets. Corbyn dismisses them.

The Tory Nicholas Scott spoke for many in summing up:

Gerry (like Corbyn) was of course was unrepentant and even carried on popping in to Parliament. As Corbyn's handler he was a regular at Corbyn's constituency office throughout the 80s & 90s. 6/12
Corbyn and Gerry have remained close ever since. Here at a 'Sinn Fein' & Troops Out event in the early 90s I think, with Corbyn looking at his limpest. 7/12

I'm not sure if Gerry got to meet him, but he did meet up with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, in 2011.
