They operate out of fear of Republicans and most of the party base is satisfied with that. Support weakness from Schumer because “what do you want, more power for McConnell?”
Democratic voters are very into the idea of “we have to be unified now and eat gruel then when we win after the election we can fix all these things.” I’m here to tell you as someone who has written about this stuff for a long time now, that second part never happens.
Now is the time to fight and strengthen the ideological issues SO WHEN you have power you can enact them. It was in the minority Republicans oriented themselves around issues like cutting taxes for the super rich. They didn’t say “wait until we beat Clinton” to sort it out.
I completely reject the idea that Democrats can’t innately be as effective as the gop. That defeatist stuff is what Democratic leaders thrive on because they know the base is so scared of the boogeyman they won’t demand more.

This is the same mindset that got us into Iraq. “Voters think Democrats are weak and gop is strong so we just capitulate to Bush and the war and then we can talk about Medicare, never mind caving on a key issue reinforces the image of Democratic weakness.”
I think both the party leadership and the voters are guilty of this stuff and it feeds off the other. It’s not good we have to rely on the gop to pull off a disastrous war or a criminal presidency to win the house when all the gop needs to do is wave the bloody shirt
Think about 2010 the year Democratic voters shrugged because there was no boogeyman and gop voters turned out because Obama gave millions of people health care. Our entire politics encapsulated.
Yes Democratic waves in 2006 and 2018 were great. It took thousands murdered in Iraq by Bush blunders and a Muslim ban and attacks on immigrants from Trump to make them happen. Seems stupid.
