I’d agree that good people attract other good people. They also attract people who often look and sound like them, and come from similar schools, classes and backgrounds.
Everybody wants to hire the best people. Some companies are just able to pay above market salaries to attract them.
I’m curious of the role selection bias plays into the attitude here. When hiring processes are notoriously hard, people who pass naturally assume they’re amazing and special, and so anybody else who passes also must be amazing and special.
However how much is the selection process shaping the troupe of people they hire. For instance people who have the aggressive resilience to manage full day interviews being grilled by each team member?
Some people thrive under those conditions, but may actually turn out to be average performers. Others don’t, but may be amazing. However if they never get through the process it’s easy to convince yourself that your surrounded by geniuses.
What happens to a company culture where everybody thinks they are special? I belive we’re starting to see the societal results of that now.

I’ve met plenty of people working g at big tech companies who are convinced they’re special but appear on the surface to be average.
So again, what happens when a company is run by people who think they’re geniuses. Think they’re smarter than everybody else including both the people they serve and the people there to protect them (legislators)?
I’m also curious who does all the necessary maintenance and delivery work, because in every company the majority of the work doesn’t require “the best” people. In fact “the best” people will often get bored by this work and leave.
Maybe this is why staff turnover in some big tech company teams is as little as 9 months. You get the company name on your resume, realise that you’ll be doing pretty dull work, and leave for a better offer when one comes knocking.
I should add that this thread was in no way a critic of the person who gave the talk, the person who tweeted the message or any particular company. Just thinking aloud here really.
I should also add that hiring is REALLY hard and a lot of my manager friends seem to spend an inordinate amount of time hiring. So there aren’t any easy answers here.
