Excess cars (even excess cleaner cars) have a huge net cost in human and money terms to @greatermcr .. Paradoxically that #includes the God GVA.

Many things we know about cars and motor vehicles and their use in GM that #do #not suggest discouraging their use into city and town centres would not be harmful as believed and stated.

Running anywhere in GM is maybe a different Q tho.

We know that in 2011 the car and van ownership/access inside the M60 was about 60% of households. To turn that on its head 40% had no access at all. In some wards there are towards 60% of households with no access at all. @thomasforth has mapped this.

We know too that trips to work across the city centre cordon into Manchester using cars have tumbled relentlessly from about 30% in 2009 to 23% in 2018. Also dropping fast in absolute number. Cycling, walking, than and train have all grown strongly.

We know that (on average) young people are waiting longer and longer to learn to drive or are not bothering to learn at all. It's mixed but in some cases not owning a car and not flying and recycling etc have become aspirational where once driving and cars were.

Although bus ridership in GM has not crashed as in other places we know the network has weakened, that there have been fails and takeovers, and that day fares are very high. There is no carnet/clipper product. Free city bus and school bus are popular. And Leigh guided bus too.

We have known for a very long time that widening roads induces motor traffic. Let's say for 50 years and the rest. Despite knowing this we are still widening roads and building roads. Doing the opposite evaporates traffic. Journeys are simply made, but in other ways. Nudge.

We have a clearer understanding of the more obvious harms and costs of motor transport and roads. And we also have a better understanding of the benefits and savings from human powered moving and of being outdoors. In GM the net harm of the big five is £3.75bn per year.

Last one for now. Finally we know that these harms - AQ, congestion, isolation, global heating, collisions, inactivity - fall on poorer communities.
