I was humbled in our "Embodied Vehicle" @AutomotiveUI workshop today. When we proposed it, we were thinking of discussing:
1) symbiosis between vehicle & driver
2) communicate telematics data to human senses
3) respond to driver's intent from physio data
4) and more...

1/6
That was, until we asked the participants to complete the sentence. "The Embodied Vehicle is...".

A participant stated matter-of-fact,"The Embodied Vehicle is one that is currently designed for male bodies." 2/6
Another female participant chimed in,"My husband bought a [SUV]. Adjusting the seat to reach the pedals means that I choke myself with the seatbelt. Also, the seat doesn't fit. I wished I didn't feel every bone in my pelvis every time I braked." 3/6
Did you know that a belted female driver is 47% more likely than a belted male driver to suffer from serious injuries in a car crash??? I did not. 4/6

Did you know that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration only started using female crash test dummies in 2003. 5/6

So, some of us decided to discuss how seats could be height-adjusted to avoid air-bag injuries, adjustable footpedals instead of adjustable seats, conformable seats, different seat harnesses... I did not get to discuss cyborgs. But that was fine. I learned something new. 6/6
Like a typical man, I failed to thank my colleagues who "broke my mind". #ShailieThakkar @Eeshaw10 #SonjaCornelsen #UniversalDesign

Like good academics, they recommended me to read more. 🙂
