So what if we could hear this as a more general indictment against the ways western society has lost a sense of generational responsibility?
My husband teases me that I trace every contemporary problem back to the Sexual Revolution. I'll be completely dramatic about latest current events & he'll say, "I know, I know, honey, it's all b/c of the #sexualrevolution."
It's funny... but also not.
It's funny... but also not.
Here's the thing: The Sexual Revolution wasn't about sex. It was an expression of a deeper radical autonomy & uncoupling of ourselves from responsibility to community--both previous & future generations.
But our attitudes toward sex are a remarkable plumb line for measuring generational fragmentation b/c sex is the thing that makes future generations & marriage is the thing that holds families (& communities) together.
The moral Qs are larger than your sex life tho. They are Qs about self-sacrifice, stewardship, & the responsibility to honor those who came before us & to care for those who come after us.
And the very things that will destroy our families, churches, & country--things like consumption, greed, & self-indulgence--are the very things that will ultimately destroy our planet.
It's striking to hear a teenager call adults to account. And whether you agree or disagree w/ her focus on #climatechange, hear the deeper truth she's articulating:
You have a responsibility to those who come after you.
You have a responsibility to those who come after you.
Think how this fundamental truth would change the culture of our churches, homes, & communities. Think how it would change your life to know that your choices will live after you.
