It is #InternationalPodcastDay and it has been awhile since I shared a list of my favourite podcasts. I Marie Kondo my list quite regularly. But at any given time, I have over 50 podcasts on my list. So here are my Top 10 these days (in no particular order).Enjoy!
1. My go-to podcast on a historical narrative on current politics is The East is a Podcast @east_podcast by the irreverent @UrOrientalist - sharp commentary, never bites his tongue and weaves loads of archival material. I never miss an episode.
2. As I currently live in Europe, I love keeping up with news on the continent. @EuropeansPod is a weekly take on European politics by a journalist based in Paris chatting with her opera singer friend based in Amsterdam. Smart and light-hearted with a liberal take on Europe.
3. Tea with @mamacash by my friend @zohramoosa and her colleague Happy Mweni Kinyili is a great listen. As a cisgender man, their take on feminisms enlightens my worldview. I always learn so much about gender and feminist politics through their banter.
4. The Knowledge Project by @ShaneAParrish is an absolute delight on a wide range of subjects. You master the best of what other people have already figured out. Shane is an excellent conversationalist - brings out so much richness from his subjects without spotlighting himself.
5. @onbeing by @kristatippett should be on anyone’s list who wants to slowdown and process the world more gently and thoughtfully, keeping that moral imagination alive without the #FOMO - if we all had conversations like she does, we would be so much better as people.
6. For all the desis, @badbrownaunties should be on your list - it is an addictive banter by @rkidvai & @ty_ushka - they are total timepass. It is like listening to two animated aunties gossiping oblivious to others at a noisy Indian wedding party with all its family intrigues.
7. Have You Heard George’s Podcast? by @GeorgeThePoet is so hard to describe but it is one of the most beautiful & heartwrenching listens- pure artistry in mixing sounds, poetry, memoir & conscience-awakening, they remain etched in your ears long after you finished listening.
8. Inactive lately, Aria Code from the Metropolitan Opera pulls back the curtains on some of the most famous arias in opera history. Listen to their back catalogue from the start. Best heard in the quiet of the night. This is truly a feast for your ears.
9. @MeditativeStory made by @rohan_21awake is an interesting new format in storytelling with a reflexive edge. It wants you to listen & ponder life. It has its moments of brilliance, especially the episode with Pico Iyer. It is definitely worth your time.
10. The Open Ears Project by @clemencybh is an absolute treat for your ears. It does not demand much except 5-7 minutes of your time everyday. More than anything else, this gem of a mini-podcast is about the emotional power of classical music and the memories we hold dear to it.
There are the big famous ones on the scene and they need no introduction but they get a lot of love - like Modern Love, The Ezra Klein Show, Desert Island Discs, The New Yorker Radio Hour, The TED Interview, HARDTalk, The Lonely Palette, FT Culture Call & FT Tech Tonic.
That is a wrap for #InternationalPodcastDay - please feel free to recommend your favourite ones, that are not on the Apple Podcasts top rankings. Let’s give them some love and get more audiences for them. Will be happy to retweet your recommendations.
