There is a story the bees used to tell, which makes it hard to disbelieve. #Storytime
A flock of sheep who had left their farm had chosen a wolf as their leader. #Storytime
Two years later, some of the sheep were starting to regret their choice, as the lead wolf brought in more and more of his friends, all of them hungry and not at all averse to the odd haunch of mutton. #Storytime
Fearing that the flock might revolt, the pack of wolves held a meeting. To this they invited only one sheep; a rather gullible, pretty sheep who believed she was different from the rest. #Storytime
“I’ve chosen you as my deputy,” said the lead wolf to the pretty sheep. “You will henceforth be the one charged with the responsibility of keeping peace within the flock, and ensuring that only the right kind of sheep are selected to feed our allies.” #Storytime
“The right kind of sheep?” said the pretty sheep.#Storytime
“Of course,” replied the wolf warmly. “We only ever eat ugly sheep. Ugly sheep are stupid and dull. Ugly sheep do nothing to improve the strain, and, left unchecked, would make of ours a very unimpressive flock." #Storytime
"What we need are more sheep like you. Clever sheep. Independent sheep. Most of all, pretty sheep.”
“I see,” said the pretty sheep. “Well, that sounds very sensible.”#Storytime
And so, with the pretty sheep at its head, the flock went on as usual. Every day, the wolves charged the pretty sheep with the task of choosing the next meal. #Storytime
Sheep after sheep was sacrificed to satisfy the hungry wolves; but the pretty sheep kept on telling herself that it was all for the good of the flock. #Storytime
Some of the other sheep disagreed. “How could you do this to your own kind?” they said. #Storytime
But the pretty sheep would not listen to them. “You are not my kind,” she said. “If you were, then the wolves would not want to eat you in the first place.” And she went on serving the wolves, secure in the knowledge that she was safe, and that her masters needed her. #Storytime
One day, a visiting wolf came to stay. He was the leader of a powerful rival pack, and the wolves made every effort to impress him. “You must be hungry after your trip,” they said. “As you see, we have plenty of meat. What’s ours is yours. We beg you, serve yourself.” #Storytime
And so the visiting wolf grabbed the nearest sheep and in spite of her indignant protests, tore her pretty throat out. #Storytime
“What was that sheep bleating about?” he said, when he had taken the edge off his appetite. “Something about my having made the wrong choice, and needing to choose an ugly, stupid sheep instead?”#Storytime
“Oh don’t worry,” said the wolves. “All sheep look the same to us.”
And then they all joined in the feast, agreeing that while all sheep *looked* the same, this one *tasted* delicious.
#Storytime
The end.
