Complacency kills democracy, and the road to saving ours is a long one.

Meanwhile, observers line the sides of the road watching us, as if democracy is a spectator sport in which they have no stake other than that akin to buying a lottery ticket and hoping for the best.

The watchers jump in front of us and flag us down to tell us that we should just pull over and watch things fix themselves, as if thoughts and prayers are the higher moral ground.

"Be patient," they say. "Trust the Speaker," as if trusting a powerful politician who's acted against the party and people repeatedly might suddenly produce different results.

They chastise, chide, and criticize, heaping burning coals onto the backs of battle-weary resisters already soot-covered and suffocating: friends mean friendly fire now, instead of resources or respite.

Democracy requires action, and the least those abdicating their jobs as good citizens can do is to stop being roadblocks to saving it.

The very least.
