This week I spoke to 2 women both owed council tax and both were being threatened by bailiffs. Both were crying. No one should live in fear like this thepoorsideof.life
Can you imagine having bailiffs banging at your door and windows and also shouting through the letter box. It's bloody scary. BTW local councils don't care.
They refuse to help people and instead send them to citizens advice in the hope that they can contact the council tax department
People are literally killing themselves because of threats made by bailiffs etc. Being in debt shouldn't be a crime. We don't have debtors prisons anymore but they still send people to prison for owing council tax
I've been campaigning against this unfair system and the bedroom tax since the beginning. Why is it OK for some to think that it's ok for people to be scared in their own homes
I've seen the queues outside the magistrates courts that local authorities hire for the day. They make sure that they scare people. It's a threat. Pay up or we'll lock you up. We don't care if you don't have the money
If local councils put as much effort into helping people rather than threatening people then the world would be a much better place.
Oh and it costs more to collect council tax than they actually receive from people. It's in a constant negative state. It's not working. We need to abolish it like the poll tax was abolished. This is effectively the poll tax in a different guise.
Thousands upon thousands of people are living in fear in their own homes. It's not acceptable. Let's hope that @UKLabour @johnmcdonnellMP @jeremycorbyn can stop this cruel system when they eventually get into power.
I know that I'm ranting but I can't get the sight of 2 lovely women crying because they were scared. Anyone condoning this has blood on their hands.
