@StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick I first met Pete about 7 years ago, amid a raging, myth-fueled media frenzy that put Social Security disability benefits on the chopping block. 2/
@StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick His was one of the first national platforms interested in telling the real story about SSDI—at a time when NPR, WaPo, the Boston Globe and countless others were disappointingly giving air to dangerous myths & uncritically repeating GOP talking points. 3/
@StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick Beyond SSDI, Pete was incredibly committed to elevating poverty-related issues, regularly inviting me, @TalkPoverty founder @gregkaufmann—& most importantly people living in poverty—on the show to talk about threats to SNAP, the dangers of so-called “work requirements” & more. 4/
@StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick @TalkPoverty @GregKaufmann So much so that in 2015, when he was launching @SIRIUSXM Insight, he offered me & @traceylross the opportunity to launch a weekly radio show *entirely* devoted to covering poverty and elevating the oft-ignored voices in the movement to end it. 5/
@StandUpWithPete @PeteDominick @TalkPoverty @GregKaufmann @SIRIUSXM @traceylross He didn’t listen to the (many) naysayers in the radio world who said no one would listen to a show about poverty.
Instead he mentored us in how to produce a weekly show, how to interview guests.
That was the origin of @TalkPoverty Radio, which later became @offkiltershow. 6/
