THREAD ALERT 🚨

I can provide a little color here.

I was once a fat doctor...
Before I woke up, my medical advice to a fellow patient with obesity was empathetic... and it was the truth: “we all have lose weight and exercise, start by seeing a nutritionist”

This was my way of breaking the ice, sharing my own vulnerability...
When I was obese, my approach was to make patients feel comfortable, break down the barriers & get them to recognize/admitting the problem.

My thought was patients were in denial and I needed to proceed carefully and strategically.
Unfortunately I was blind. I knew in my heart of hearts that sending them to the nutritionist would be a fruitless endeavor, actually fruit filled leading to weight loss efforts to be fruitless
After that I never really re-engaged, other than encouraging words for the rare person who white knuckled the restriction and lost a couple pounds.

Basically my advice sucked.
My advice sucked because I felt all diets were the same and they all failed if not adhered to. I was programmed to expect and cause failure and I didn’t question this programming...
It wasn’t until my wife challenged me to rethink my own health and when I finally went to the medical literature did I see a a story unfold that was almost purposefully withheld from us medical professionals...
✅Low carb was better than low fat
✅Less meals were better than more
✅Carbohydrate restriction was safe, effective EVEN for athletes

I read over 1000+ papers, eventually over 300+ books and it’s right there underneath all the bias hiding in plains sight
So at that point when I first started, I told my wife what I was going to do. Early on the diet we went out to eat to a nice restaurant/steakhouse... mind you I rarely ate steak up until this point. The waiter came to take orders....
I’m doing everything in my power to avoid the bread. My wife orders her salad and I order two filets and two skewers of shrimp. Waiters jaw dropped and my wife looked at me with 837783929 eyes.
She whispered to me “I thought you were on a diet”... I told her I was. I had a clear vision of what I needed to do to succeed. To obstain from carbs and get ketotic I needed to eat meat until I didn’t crave bread and fries and ice cream dessert
At that moment, I was the smartest obese medical doctor giving probably the best possible medical advice to myself. I hadn’t lost a pound from days of handing out shit advice, but I knew what I was doing and why.
So I ate the two steaks and two skewers of shrimp. The waiter thought I was a fat ass, maybe I was. My wife thought I was crazy. Maybe I am. But fast forward 5 years
My health is improved in every way.

Down 150lbs
Triglycerides below 50
Hdl 70
LDL lower than when I didn’t eat steak/bacon
Running 5 minute miles
6 pack abs
Energy
Apnea gone
Mood better
So, I went from being a fat doctor giving shit advice to being a fat doctor giving himself a license to eat steak, shrimp, eggs, bacon until full... basically excellent nutritional advice... what happened over the next 4-5 years is that I became an absolute beast in every way.
I empathize with my fellow doctors with obesity. I don’t think it necessarily means they don’t know the right path to walk. 5 years ago my eyes were opened, you are only seeing the results now though... bet that waiter would be surprised from this pic

In any case, I support @KenDBerryMD his message but not his exact words. I think FAT or NOT most doctors, give shit nutritional advice. It’s rare to find ANY doctor giving good nutritional advice, it’s even rarer to find a doctor with obesity giving good nutritional advice
Here’s also another viewpoint, to close this thread off. The fattest doctor probably has the best insight on being fat. There is a value in that. I have learned immensely from my struggles, these lessons are what I pass on daily, you are receiving those lessons now.
