Interesting results from latest (10/8-14) @mingpaocom poll conducted by CUHK on protests:
Unsurprisingly, 71.4% of the 751 respondents oppose the mask ban (19.3 support it). 63.3% say it's counter-productive, 21.2-has no effect, 15.1-will calm situation…
Who's most responsible for the violence?
52.5%- govt
9.6-protesters (down 3.1% from previous poll in mid-September)
After the mask ban, should govt implement more measures under Emergency Regulations Ordinance?
76.6%- no
17.7 - yes
Do you think the police or protesters use too much violence?
On October 1, police shot a protester in the chest. Do you think that can be justified?
48.1%-no, never
20.4- not acceptable to shoot at chest
18.6- the situation was chaotic
11.4- yes, it was in self-defense
In light of the government refusing to respond to protester demands, is radical action understandable?
59.2%- yes (up 3.5% since mid-September)
27.5- no (up .6%)
How should protesters respond when confronted with people of opposing views?
25.8% - no violence, go to the police
52.6- self-defense is justifiable
18.2- attack
How should the govt respond to the current situation?
ERO measures- 17.7%
dialogue- 71.4
independent investigation of police- 87.6
restructuring police substantially- 68.8
Carrie Lam resign- 73.3
universal suffrage- 81.3
Groups like @citizenspc & Kong Pollster have conducted polls of protesters. The main take-away from them is overwhelming unity across the spectrum from frontline protesters to the most moderate. This Ming Pao poll takes the pulse of a broad spectrum of #HK citizens.
The Ming Pao poll shows overwhelming support from across HK for 2 protester demands- an independent investigation of police & universal suffrage. The govt tho says it won't do either. It shows ambivalence about protester violence but greater disapproval of police & blame on govt.
So there's unity among HK people for:
-independent investigation of police (87.6)
-universal suffrage (81.3)
-no more ERO measures (76.6)
-restructuring of police (68.8)
In all these matters, the #HK govt & #HK people are in deep disagreement.
