SOLVING BREXIT
Brexit could be solved if enough brave MPs stood together for the good of the UK. They would have to state, in a cross-party non-partisan manner that EVERY effort had been made to turn the referendum result into workable reality, but it proved IMPOSSIBLE. 1/7
In other words, a collective mea culpa from across the political spectrum: "We tried, but the task proved beyond us ALL. Why? Because there is no scenario in which Brexit can be made to work for the UK. This wasn't clear before the referendum. It is crystal clear now." 2/7
Detail might also be provided of the huge, palpable effort that had been deployed in trying to "make Brexit work", not just in financial terms, but in time, energy, planning, expertise. A secondary consideration, but one which underpinned the seriousness of the main message. 3/7
This unprecedented selfless contrition in the national interest could be followed (by agreement) by a General Election within 12 months. All major parties would commit to a binding undertaking that the failure of Brexit would be completely off the table during the campaign. 4/7
This would allow politics to start to detox and refocus on solving the many urgent problems facing the UK (the NHS, social care, housing, jobs, educational and other opportunities, etc.) free of constant stone-throwing in the aftermath of the Brexit project's collapse. 5/7
Of course, the Brexit Party would never agree to such an undertaking. But they have no representation in Westminster anyway. If all other parties agreed to take Brexit off the table for one election cycle, it would give the nation a chance to start recomposing itself. 6/7
And then a few years down the line, once the fear and doubt and anger has faded, by all means have a proper grown-up sensible conversation about Brexit again. But we shouldn't be going ahead with this eleventh hour fifty-ninth minute stitch up that will please *nobody*. 7/7
I made a similar point in my book, where I went on to outline 40 things that MPs could focus on, beyond Brexit, to make a start on fixing the UK...
