At #FORCE2019 @npscience getting everyone warmed up for a panel on "Who will influence the success of #preprints in biology and to what end?"
@npscience . @npscience laid important foundations for the discussion: (1) be aware of stakeholders' cultural backgrounds and the influences on the their viewpoints; and (2) it's always a balance between individual vs collaborative gains. #Force2019
@npscience First panelist @ReaderMeter compared #preprints to a staging area, akin to how we would interact with an #opensource project, where all sorts of collaboration could happen and #openscience practised 🌟 #Force2019
@npscience @ReaderMeter . @TheoBloom @MedArXiv summarised why researchers would want to #preprint: early feedback, increase awareness, grant applications, etc. – quite different from why servers/policy makers may want them to #force2019
@npscience @ReaderMeter @TheoBloom @MedArXiv . @AmyeKenall highlighted the importance of #preprints as a "staging" publication for further checks and reviews, and how publishers can make these workflows more straightforward and seamless. #force2019
I'm loving @humbertodebat's "most boring slide of #force2019"- economics, culture and society *cannot* be ignored when it comes to conversations re #openacess and #preprints.
Am also loving how @npscience is facilitating questions with very minimal guidelines (and her shout-out to @tuckeve) 🚀 she also emphasised that she would like to hear from usually less-projected voices #force2019
Discussions on #preprint licensing: do researchers care? If they don't, do we need better education? Are there complexities around CC-BY for all preprints that cannot be ignored? #force2019
How simple/complex should #preprint information be communicated? What are the important questions to ask re #equity to preprints? How can we ensure that #preprint servers will be #sustainable so we don't lose knowledge? #force2019
Wrapping up the panel, @ReaderMeter hopes the community can explore how #preprint can work for the global south as much as the north, @TheoBloom pointed out that most preprints are in English #force2019
#preprint system sustainability ( £, adoption, etc) is *crucial* to consider and discuss for preprint success. @humbertodebat ends saying that if we figure all this out - preprints could become the primary, super powerful mean of research. ✨✨✨✨ #force2019
Personal reflections: (1) SO MANY QUESTIONS, super exciting and good indication that #preprints are moving forward (2) one size fit all is not the way, though diff solutions can inform each other? (3) @npscience set an outstanding eg on running panels. Loads to learn 💡#force2019
I also love the ending slide, asking participants to consider "who share your vision and what power do you have to pursue it". Deep pondering required 🧠. #force2019
