Thread: Cardiff University says its survey has found a majority of both Leavers & Remainers believe that violence towards MPs, injuries to the public & break-up of the UK is a "price worth paying" to get their way over Brexit. It's quite stark reading.
The key questions on violence need considering beyond the press summary.
Q on violence towards MPs: "For each of the following [statements] tell us whether you think this would be a price worth paying or not worth paying [for preferred Brexit outcome]" & then: "Violence directed towards Members of Parliament. I see it as **a risk** but it's worth it."
Note the question includes the caveat of violence being merely "a risk". We each perceive risk in quite different ways. So how many respondents genuinely believed there would be violence?
The survey tried to capture that. Cardiff Uni says: "Majorities in England, Scotland and Wales think that violence towards MPs and violent protests in which people are badly injured is ‘likely to occur’ if Brexit takes place." (Data link at the end)
What would the results have been if the question had been Something like: "Violence to achieve a political goal is terrorism. Do you think violence towards MPs [to achieve preferred Brexit goal] is a price worth paying?"
