For those of the Shakta tradition of Hinduism, Diwali coincides with the worship of Kali. The tradition of Mother Goddess is very old & 11,000 year old Palaeolithic sites in show signs of her worship. Here are findings from Bahor in MP. 1/n

Baghor was excavated in the 1980s by joint team of UC Berkley and Allahabad Univ. They found a "shrine" from 8-9000 BCE. It consisted of a stone rubble platform topped by a "coloured stone" that was worshipped. 2/n
With one exception, all the researchers were convinced that it represents a religious shrine. Interestingly, the area still has a living tradition of building such platforms for worshipping forms of Shakti (the paper mentions several of them). 3/n
