Those calling for a referendum before an election really do need to explain how they'll find in the numbers in the Commons and then, more importantly, how they plan to pass the legislation.
Will this govt do it? Plainly not. So it has to involve a no-confidence vote and then the squabble over who lead the national unity govt. And then, if you got that far, you have to show that you can get a whole bill on it through.
And then explain why the spectacle of all that would not play directly into the hands of its enemies - looking like a Westminster stitch-up just before a referendum campaign that will go all out to portray it as exactly that.
