i had an uneasy feeling yesterday, given that it was the anniversary of the pittsburgh tree of life synagogue shooting, and went downtown to check all of charlottesville’s racist hotspots. what was jessica reavis of the league of the south doing here?
it’s something i do often. and i’m not alone. sometimes on my walks, i’ll run into a friend doing the same thing. just checking. just keeping us safe. because as long as those statues stand, people like jessica will keep making racist pilgrimages to them.
it’s heartbreaking that we feel compelled to watch those spaces. to revisit the sites of our small town’s recent atrocities. but given how often we find violent racists hanging out or evidence of recently placed fascist propaganda, we won’t stop anytime soon.
after court today, i spent some more walking through the parks. some folks want to pin the recent vandalism of the statues on me because i was the first to post about it. i saw it because i’m in those parks on a regular basis. because i love this community & i want us to be safe.
before i headed home today, i walked down fourth street. i ran into friends who had just finished taking down some fascist propaganda placed on the spot where a nazi murdered a woman two years ago. i checked that spot yesterday. we won’t stop until they do.
