Appreciate @ACPA Commission for Professional Prep hosting this webinar on using the Strategic Imperative on Racial Justice & Decolonization in #SAGrad & #HigherEd programs. Thanks for Drs. @DianSquire, @DrDLStewart, @esjayque, & Jamie Workman for sharing their time & expertise!
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque If #SAPro & #FacultyLife folks haven't seen it yet, check out this very helpful framework for gudiance: myacpa.org/sites/default/… @ACPA
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DianSquire suggests utilizing historical #HigherEd analysis such as Ebony & Ivy (amazon.com/Ebony-Ivy-Trou… and).
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @esjayque shares about a course assignment using university archives to research historical student activism at their home campus so students can think specifically about student activism and racial justice. He also mentions incorporating land acknowledgements on syllabi.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DrDLStewart shares how critical self-reflection and praxis are at the core of learning student development theory. He asks us to consider how we forward/center indigenous knowledge systems and critical race theory in these types of courses?
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DrDLStewart shares that Bold Vision Forward is a PRACTICAL document (not a theoretical one); suggests we have to be creative and foresee how we can act in these ways.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DianSquire reminds us that the framework is not about best practices but about people understanding themselves and how they can do #SAPro & #Higher work in new/different ways.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DrDLStewart points out that all of us are scholar-practitioners who can use the framework & strategic imperative in grad prep (in classroom, in experiential learning spaces, etc.). We have to see/include part-time faculty and practice-based supervisors as ed partners. #YES
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DianSquire recommends the following first steps for using the framework: read it, engage in meaning making for yourself, examine how framework aligns with your value structures, then determine the work you need to do within yourself, with students, in work spaces.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @esjayque recommends we engage in deep healing processes for ourselves and encourage students to do the same. We have to center healing to do racial justice and decolonizing work, or we will hurt others/not be able to show up.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DianSquire suggests two books around self-work and healing:
(1) Me & White Supremacy by Laila Saad: laylafsaad.com/meandwhitesupr…
(2) Racial Healing Handbook by Anneliese Singh: amazon.com/Racial-Healing…
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @esjayque acknowledges the strategic imperative is a living document that people should run with and incorporate it into their work in their own ways. This is what will push the imperative forward.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DrDLStewart asks us to consider how the thinking of the framework and strategic imperative can be incorporated into @ACPA commissions, councils, and directorates; can guide individual and collective conversations; and can be utilized for internal program/org assessments.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @DrDLStewart discusses how love is shaped and misshaped in popular discourse. Framework grounds definition of love from multiple discourses and scholars (bell hooks, Angela Davis, Cornell West). People can start by reading works on love from these scholars.
@ACPA @DianSquire @DrDLStewart @esjayque Dr. @esjayque notes that part of love is holding people accountable - for their harm, for their contribution, etc. Love is about both seeing people's humanity and knowing one's own worth and agency in ways that empower you to walk away from damaging relationships.
