This is huge! Not only is this case important for all students of color, it is important in advocating for Filipino Americans, who are still significantly underrepresented in UC system. I salute @littlemanila for leading this initiative. #DawnMabalonIsInTheHeart #FAHM2019
For #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth, let’s unpack why @littlemanila suing UC Regents is important for Filipino Americans. Filipinos make up 26% of CA’s Asian American population, but comprise only 11% of AA students in UC System (compared to 25% of Chinese who comprise 45%) #FAHM
Filipinos have the lowest UC admission rates out of all major Asian groups - 54% of applicants, compared to 70% Chinese, 73% Taiwanese, 69% Korean, 67% Vietnamese, 66% Indian, & 64% Japanese. Let’s unpack that! 2/3 to 3/4 of other groups are admitted but only 1/2 of Filipinos are
One explanation for the lower admissions are SAT scores. A study by @UCSanDiego finds Filipinos score lower on SATs than Whites & other Asians and on par with Black, Latinos, & Native Americans. Studies find SAT is biased against Black & Latinos, but they don’t look at Filipinos.
Analyses by Will Lacker provided by @littlemanila reveal 69.7% of Chinese in predominant Chinese city score greater than 1500 on SAT, while only 12.8% of Filipino students living in predominant Filipino city do - all in comparison to 48.3% of California students who score >1500.
Marginalization of Filipinos in elite schools is not unique to California; it’s just not talked about because schools don’t disaggregate data. Look at Hawai’i - largest ethnic group in state, but among lowest enrollment @uhmanoa. #FAHM2019 civilbeat.org/2019/10/most-u…
From a personal perspective, this is important because I was one of the few out of my barkada who went to a UC and I always felt like a lucky one. At @UCIrvine, I was well aware of lack of Filipinos compared to other AA groups. We were viewed as the non-model minorities.
At Ivy Leagues (which love standardized tests), it’s even more noticeable. But they don’t disaggregate data so we can’t prove it. At @Columbia you can count number of Filipinos in each incoming class. They all know each other. Literally. That’s kapwa + systemic racism #FAHM2019
This lawsuit could mean Filipinos (as well Black, Latinx, Southeast Asian, & Indigenous students) could actually have the same opportunities as others. Their destinies wouldn’t be determined by a test that wasn’t designed for them. Thank you @littlemanila for fighting for us.
Here are more stats based on 2018 admissions rates. Filipinos & most SEAs admitted at lower rates than other Asian American groups across many different UC campuses. #FAHM2019 #BrownAsiansExist

Here are 2018 stats from my alma mater @ucirvine. Filipino, Hmong, Cambodian, & Laotian students are admitted at notably lower rates than other Asian groups. FYI @KababayanUCI @UCIrvine_CCC @passatuci @pusoatuci @UCIAsianAm #NoMoreSATs
