Ok, I’ve now seen it. I’m blown away by the Times report on the use of Twitter by the current White House / Trump. Sure, we know much of it, we’ve witnessed it but such an impactful set of visuals and analysis when put all together in a package. 🙌🏽😆🙏🏼 nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Important trends like this: “The president has tweeted more attacks so far this year than in the previous two years combined. In total, he has attacked at least 630 people and things in 5,889 tweets since taking office.”
In my world, I worry especially about the 1,308 in this table. Even if Twitter was fully deployed for all Presidents, I don’t think ANY (Republican or Democrat) POTUS back to Nixon would have used a single tweet to attack a news organization, let alone 1,308 times.
highly recommend reading @selectedwisdom book, “Messing with the Enemy,” to appreciate the complexity of this particular use of social media.
The @BWWings Presidency... “Mr. Scavino presented some tweets to Mr. Trump in degrees of outrageousness: “hot,” “medium” or “mild.” Mr. Trump, said one former official who saw the proposed messages, always picked the most incendiary ones...”
Actually this entire process is beyond belief and a clear @nbcsnl scene.
But this isn’t actually the way Twitter works for 99.9% of users, @KellyannePolls. They receive tweets in their timeline based on the design of an algorithm and the engagement of their peers. It’s not partisan to understand the bad and the good in both of these dimensions.
All in, it’s an amazing read and I highly recommend the time and sharing with others regardless of their politics. We all need to continue to study, learn, debate how social media is being used for good and bad - myself included. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
