I submitted the article in this thread to a conservative website that boasted "no censorship". They loved the piece but wanted to CENSOR the sentence mildly critical of Laura Loomer. I told them I would not remove it and revoked permission to publish. Judge for yourself:
The Death of Civility in Social Media
Twitter is a phenomenon that brings people together and drives them apart. It is populated by people who are politically aware, on conflicting sides of the spectrum.
You won’t find many moderates in this wild and wooly world but you will find like-minded people who you can share ideas with, vent your frustrations and get a sympathetic ear or opponents you can argue with. I love the medium and have abandoned all others.
It’s not uncommon for twitter to scoop other news outlets; news travels the globe in an instant on this platform. You’ll often find breaking news on twitter well before the news outlets, and even before Drudge has it.
Complaints about twitter censorship are legitimate and stunt the growth of people on the right who feel the full force of censorship. Laura Loomer, who I must admit irritated me with her camera hogging shenanigans, remains an important voice
but has been banned on twitter (and facebook). She had an enormous following and the respect and admiration of any army of activists. James Wood, a wise and witty fellow, refused to take down a tweet that some on the left found offensive and reported.
In truth, much worse has been said by the left about people on the right, but Woods refused to remove the tweet and Twitter banned him. He had well over a million enthusiastic followers.
These are just two examples of the censorship conservatives face daily on twitter and to a lesser extent, on facebook. Twitter takes away that which is freely given by passionate, active users of the medium – followers.
We live and die by our followers and appreciate their appreciation for the contributions we make. As we follow each other, our reach grows exponentially, giving us a much louder voice to break through the clutter.
It’s a microcosm of what is happening in the real world. Friends and families have been violently separated by ideologies. We no longer talk to one another and we certainly no longer listen. You see that daily on twitter.
If there’s a hint of disagreement, even among people who typically agree, war can break out and it often goes public. We’ve had these twitter spats better Tomi Lahren and Candance Owens for instance which became very public, nasty and divisive, daring people to choose sides.
Between the left and the right, blocking has become the solution of choice; block those who disagree and you no longer risk being reported and banned from twitter. I get lists every day of people who actively report conservatives to the big boss. My account has been suspended 2X.
Once for calling Mika of Morning Joe a “broad”, a common moniker for women in the 40s which cost me two weeks in Jack’s gulag and the second time for a tweet admittedly, that was provocative. . I was speaking metaphorically but would have bet the house that I would be banned.
And I was, for seven days. What most on the right find so frustrating about this is how pampered the left is and while occasionally their tweets may be taken down, the users are not banned. I have seen outrageous calls for the assassination of Donald Trump;
memes that would shock any fair minded person, vicious lies, smears and hyperbole directed at all who support the President. This is not to say the right does not engage in nasty tweets, directed towards the left, but here’s a critical difference.
When Ruth Bader Ginsburg had her last surgery and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer, I did not see a single tweet wishing her death. Instead, I saw compassion. It’s certainly true that we hope President Trump will have an opportunity to
nominate another Supreme Court justice but we don’t pray for the death of a sitting justice to accommodate that. This vitriol and hatred is what we now see in real life. Walk away from your keyboard and engage friends and acquaintances who differ in their ideology and sadly it
won’t take long before epithets are flying at you, if you’re on the right. I had a friend of 40 years who after the election posted on my facebook page that it was now clear to her that I had no humanity or common decency. . When I posted this story to twitter,
I was astounded by the number of likes, retweets and comments it generated. Virtually everyone who responded has had an identical experience. This scenario plays out daily in homes, at social events, and in casual conversations with acquaintances every day of the week.
If you blindly hate Donald Trump, you equally hate all those who support him. In their world, it’s not enough to censor or punish; they must destroy them, just as they tried to annihilate Brett Kavanaugh. If you don’t believe there are 43 genders, you are a bigot and a homophobe.
If you believe the Islam poses a grave threat to the United States, you are known as an Islamaphobe, racist, white nationalist and a hater. Since the day Donald Trump walked down the escalator, it has been a relentless, pernicious and vicious assault against 62 million Americans.
This cannot continue for the sake and sanity of this great country, the United States of America.
