The TV debate debate is boring but it must be obvious to everyone - I mean literally everyone - that we need an independent commission into it and for the next govt to implement its findings.
We can't go on like this, it's embarrassing: political leaders able to get away with avoiding scrutiny while asking to run the country, or stitching up the format between them.
Or with broadcasters being forced to take a controversial political decision by selecting certain candidates. It's a shitshow.
I really don't see a coherent counterargument. Those who say that TV debates suck up the oxygen of a campaign - that ship has sailed. Elections are now either about them or their format or their absence.
And anyway, these debates get lots of viewers. Anything which shows engagement and interest in the political process at election time should be encouraged.
