In case you don’t know, De Mistura is in the final touches of writing his book. So his publishers are working on him being relevant again.

I’m usually discreet and can keep a good secret..but this revisionist shit is infuriating.

So listen up...

The first and last time I saw De Mistura was during a lunch in Brussels in early March 2019, barely 4 months into his resignation. I don’t remember him complaining abt shaking hands w/ Assad.

As a matter of fact, it was me and a small group of Syrians on the table so we naturally asked him how it felt -post-resignation- to stand next to Assad and say shit like “I am hopeful”?

He said that his mission was exactly to bring peace thru shaking hands with all kinds of ppl

I remember him saying how he has shaken hands with great & terrible ppl from Kosovo to Afghanistan to Iraq’s Saddam to Assad..

The strangest part abt the talk was hearing something unusual from a career diplomat like him-issuing a direct blame on the US for not stopping the war.

He told us that he will elaborate on this “unknown fact” (the fact that the US didn’t want the war to end-acc to him) in his upcoming book, so I think we are all about to see a lot of more revision of history.

Since it was a private talk, and I gave my word to Mr. De Mistura not to say anything about the little outrageous story he told us until his book is out: I will not elaborate or mention the detail for now.

I just urge you, Mr. De Mistura to be honest. If only- just for the +500K dead Syrians. Your org itself stopped counting the dead after 500K dead in 2014.

the least you can do for these dead Syrians is to tell it like it is-including yours and everyone’s mistakes.
