@annaburhouse: Connection to nature & self is so important

@donberwick: One reason it’s poorly tackled is because leaders aren’t looking after their own wellbeing (“starts at home”)

This is brilliant @donberwick has dived in and started discussing the role of love!

“You cannot give what you don’t have” (one of my mantras!)

I’m going to respectfully disagree with @Harsha_Shah86 about there not being any burnout if the environment wasn’t so hostile.

It’s about the individual’s experience. Some would burnout in a perfect system.

Understanding the *experience* is the key.

#KFOnline
What I *do* agree with is @Harsha_Shah86: “don’t tell us to practice mindfulness/yoga etc”

That’s an additive model and won’t work.

I wrote about this earlier:

Here it is… @moherlihy: “Stop treating the symptoms, look for the cause”

And what is the cause? At the ROOT of the issue of an individual’s experience of burnout is a misunderstanding of how that experience is being created.

(That’s not to say I don’t think the environment should be changed – it totally should! It’s just not the root *cause* of burnout.) #KFOnline
I just asked a question that builds on this quoted tweet below: Should we be looking at “what’s strong, not what’s wrong”?

Many clinicians are not burning out—in the exact same challenging work environment—and there’s surely lots to learn from those people? #KFOnline
Yes! @annaburhouse talking about taking into account how our psychology works. The more we look in that direction, the more answers we will find. #KFOnline
I agree. But it’s not for everyone. Understanding what yoga is actually *doing* looks further upstream in the human experience… and that’s where the goodies are.

Yoga is great if it’s “your thing” but it’s certainly not necessary, in order to “enhance our humanity” #KFOnline
Compassion & connection.

@WestM61: Practicing compassion is crucial. “Connection is what it’s all about”

Oh, I ❤️ this!

The thing about compassion is… it’s innate. It’s natural. It doesn’t need practice. It’s a natural side effect of understanding how we work.

My question didn’t get asked, hey ho. #Burnout is a popular topic!

Here it is, for the record 👇🏻

Signs of #burnout @annaburhouse: Feelings of dissociation.

Yup. Burnout’s a warning sign. All “negative” emotion is telling you… you’ve slipped further away from how you’ve been designed to work – present, focused, in the moment, not off in your head. #KFOnline
Thank you @TheKingsFund @WestM61 @annaburhouse @Harsha_Shah86 @donberwick @moherlihy for a really good webinar on #burnout.

It was refreshingly insightful. Michael really nailed the key point at the end: it’s about being present to it all, not ruminating.

👏🏻👏🏻 #KFOnline
@TheKingsFund @WestM61 @annaburhouse @Harsha_Shah86 @donberwick @moherlihy Final thought: The solution (which does need sharing with leaders, as a priority) is *so* much closer than we think it is.

Understanding the individual human experience—how our minds create it, moment to moment—is the key.

Happy to talk more! 💟 #KFOnline

To anyone watching/following the #KFOnline webinar on #burnout, and maybe scratching your head over my tweets (I grant, it does sound a bit weird at times), then here’s a 3 minute video that explains what stress is, and where it comes from: facebook.com/watch/?v=10155…
