THREAD. I knew when @DoctorTro announced he was attending #obesityweek2019, we were in for some entertainment, but his write-up gives us all so much more than that. Insightful, heartfelt and a must read here. 1/ doctortro.com/obesity-week-2….
I have been a participant in, & analyst of, the #KETO movement for two years. I found #KETO during a leave of absence from my role as head of corporate strategy for a multinational conglomerate. I was desperately searching for a way to help son with debilitating ADD. 2/
I found #KETO & my son's life trajectory transformed. Who knew a fresh fruit smoothie every morning alongside his bacon & eggs was sending him to school unable to learn? Removed smoothie & the world became his oyster. Then, like many of you, I went down the rabbit hole. 3/
Among friends & family I have persuaded to try #KETO Nutrition Therapy, I have seen: 4 long-term autoimmune conditions disappear; hundreds of pounds lost; metabolic syndrome reversed; over 20 prescription meds "de-prescribed"; countless mental health improvements; lives saved. 4/
One of many heroes of this movement, Dr Jeff Volek, tells me the high degree of pathway converge between the metabolic benefits of ketosis & the pathophysiology of dozens of chronic diseases, offers a large number of potential applications where drug therapies have failed. 5/
Of course, you all see these N=1s every day in your patients, families & friends. But I, like @DoctorTro in his post above, have been mystified by the resistance & antagonism of some in HEALTHcare, to the possibility of finding a path to alleviating so much human suffering. 6/
And then, as I was reading @DoctorTro's post (#1 above), I remembered the work of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck. Dweck's famous book, Mindset, argues that we adopt one of two mindsets: "fixed" or "growth." 7/
A “fixed mindset” assumes that our intelligence is a static given, which we can’t change in any meaningful way. Success, therefore, becomes defined as affirmation of that inherent intelligence. Avoiding failure becomes a way of maintaining the sense of being smart or skilled. 8/
As Dweck says, "Believing that your qualities are carved in stone creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. If you have only a certain amount of intelligence — well, then you’d better prove that you have a healthy dose of it." 9/
A “growth mindset,” alternatively, thrives on challenge & sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence, but as a springboard for growth & for stretching our existing abilities & knowledge. A “growth mindset” creates a passion for learning rather than a hunger for approval. 10/
In reflecting on @DoctorTro's experience at #obesityweek2019, and reactions to #KETO more broadly, from @HarvardChanSPH, @American_Heart & @USDANutrition, I think this difference between "fixed"
& "growth" mindsets explains much of the inexplicable. 11/
This is not a judgement. Where we fall on the line btw growth vs fixed mindset is largely determined in childhood (although possible to GROW out of a fixed mindset). It's more an attempt to explain the divide between those who are excited by progress & those threatened by it. 12/
Dweck says, "In one world — the world of fixed traits — success is about proving you’re smart or talented. Validating yourself. In the other — the world of changing qualities — it’s about stretching yourself to learn something new. Developing yourself. 13/
The #LCHF/#KETO community is self-evidently full of the latter "growth" mindset. Showing compassion for those whose self worth is deeply entangled with 'being right' may prove a faster path to improving public health than constant warfare. Thanks @DoctorTro! THREAD END
