I'm doing my best to understand the Lib Dems' position on Brexit, but I have to say that I am struggling. THREAD 1/
The LD USP is that they will stop Brexit. If they win an overall majority, they will revoke A50. It is a policy I like very much, and one which I have been urging all opposition parties to rally behind. See eg: blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2019/09… 2/
But... with the best will in the world, an LD majority simply isn't going to happen. The question is how the LDs should position themselves in a situation in which (best case scenario for them) there is a hung Parliament, and they can perhaps influence the direction of travel. 3/

At the risk of repeating myself... the opposition parties are messing up this General Election. They will hand PM Johnson a 5-year mandate. Seen through a Brexit lens, things are very straightforward. But the opposition has simply failed to meet the GE challenge. Thread. 1/
The reason we are having a GE, is because PM Johnson either could not, or would not try to, get his Brexit deal through the last Parliament. He feared the scrutiny the WA and WAB would receive in Parliament. 2/
The opposition agreed that time was needed for proper scrutiny; and were able, via the Benn Act and the Letwin Amendment to stall PM Johnson's plans. But they were not able to agree on a GNU, or on a path towards a Brexit resolution. 3/

A quick reflection on the new general election (GE) phase of Brexit. Thread. 1/
We are having the GE because Johnson could not (or perhaps was not willing to try to) get his new Brexit deal through Parliament. 2/
He decided to call a GE to win a mandate for the next five years. In the months before the GE, opposition parties (and Tory rebels) were able to unite to stop his deal from passing (at least without sufficient HoC scrutiny). 3/

The barons basically said to the king that, "you rule us because we say you do".

This in turn became the Consent of the Governed, the basis of our Democracy
Consent is not open-ended, it cannot be given through omission, not can it be invented after the event, not can it be extrapolated from decisions which were not an option at the time.

Any of these factors would undermine the point of the clause, to limit divine arbitrary rule

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!
