Twitter has made a new improvement to PNG uploads effective now!

PNGs uploaded with 256 colors or less will automatically be converted PNG8

Thread 🧵⬇️
Now, when users upload a PNG image (see above for clients that support uploading PNG), Twitter will examine the number of colors in the PNG and if there are 256 colors or less (including transparency pixels) the image will automatically be converted to a PNG8 image.
For images 900x900 and smaller, this means performance will improve as the byte size of the image will be significantly reduced without any loss in quality. The image byte size reduction is often cut by 50% or better.
For images that are larger than 900x900, this means the image will be losslessly preserved instead of converting to JPEG. The byte size of a PNG8 is roughly the byte size of a JPEG, meaning we will be able to keep the performance benefits of delivering images fast to all users.
Users can continue to upload PNG8 images themselves to ensure the image will be preserved lossless, but this change means that for images that could be PNG8, Twitter will do the work and remove that burden from the user making the upload.
This is just one step in the progress of making images on Twitter the best possible for all users.

(This Tweet's image is losslessly preserved by Twitter converting it to PNG8, but is 65% smaller in byte size)
