CONSTITUENCY PROJECT: N1tn Wasted in 10 Years, Says President Buhari. The President decried constituency projects for which the federal government has appropriated N1 trillion in the last 10 years without corresponding impact on the lives of the people.
He said that a report had confirmed federal govt’s worst fear that constituency projects had no trickle-down effects on the masses. Constituency projects are initiated by NASS lawmakers to be sited in their respective constituencies as a way to attract development to their people
The first phase report of tracking of these projects by ICPC confirmed this govt’s worst fear that the benefits of the constituency projects were not trickling down to the common people at d grassroots despite the huge sums appropriated for constituency projects since inception.
President Muhammadu Buhari expressed delight that through the effort of ICPC some contractors were returning to sites to execute projects hitherto abandoned, while project sponsors were also being held to account.
"The ICPC has my full support and the support of this govt to hold fully to account contractors, complicit public servants and project sponsors who divert funds meant for constituencies or other people-oriented welfare projects of my govt," Buhari said.
Those who reduce quality of projects meant for our people will be held accountable. He urged the NASS to expedite the passage of the Special Crimes Court Bill, noting that the passage is a ‘‘specific priority’’ of this administration’s Economic Recovery & Growth Plan 2017-2020.
The President further appealed to the judiciary to support the creation of Special Crimes Court.
‘‘The fight against corruption is of course not only for govt and anti-corruption agencies alone. All arms and tiers of govt must develop and implement the anti-corruption measures.
‘‘I invite the legislative and judicial arms of government to embrace and support the creation of Special Crimes Court that Nigerians have been agitating for to handle corruption cases."
