We put on Beverly Hills Cop to watch with the kids ... neither of us had seen it since the 80s. It's a stunningly different movie now.

We both remember it being super funny - but it's really not. It's really raw, emotional...
I think what was funny to audiences in the 80s was just the novelty of Eddie Murphy's laugh.

Otherwise, this is a really fucking serious movie! Racialized violence, poverty and the cycle of crime.

Super interesting having this experience.
It gets goofier - which seems good - but rarely funny. Darker in the beginning than I ever would've guessed.
