So apparently, according to some fabulous and learned replies, this 'buy British' commitment in the Conservative Party manifesto is almost certainly contrary to a WTO agreement which we have signed
See for example this reply on 'Buy British' - if the encouragement worked it would be illegal under WTO rules. Yet again shows how cakeism doesn't work in international trade (and how difficult it is to know every aspect of trade policy)
Also why governments negotiate and scrutinise trade agreements with extreme care and transparency. And taking time - because trade agreements are treaties with extensive commitments which affect our businesses, public services etc
The Conservatives commitment to negotiate and implement a trade agreement with the EU in 11 months, and with the US and Japan in 3 years, without any rationale or parliamentary process, is reckless and runs the risk of all sorts of damaging and long-lasting mistakes
