#IGotWokeWhen

My answer is never. I do not think it is really possible to be woke to the myriad ways systemic racism affects people of color. I STARTED LISTENING when I asked my best friend to explain some rude Black guys' behavior to me and she said: "How should I know?"
And why should I think a Black woman from an upper-class Jersey suburb could explain some Black youth from a poor neighborhood? I realized I was thinking her skin color made her the Explainer of Blackness and that was racist. Which meant I was racist. So, I started listening
I started reading. I started getting to know more than my one Black friend. I started working at POC-led organizations and having Black bosses. I started trying to do better. And I still think I am not woke. I am listening.
