“Avoid disaster.” The @nypost editorial board pens another sensationalist fear monger to terrify New Yorkers about basic reforms like marijuana legalization, police transparency, & parole consideration of people 55 or older. Just for fun, they call “mass incarceration” a “lie.” 
As background, yesterday, the author of this piece tried his line about “mass incarceration” being a “crock” from his account. @prisonculture accurately indicated that it’s far worse. Doesn’t include impact out of prison. Call it “mass criminalization.”
“Everything.” @nypost makes it sound like were asking for world. Marijuana legalization to stop the primary driver of broken windows. Basic police transparency that exists in 48 other states. Ending punishment for “walking while trans.” And just *considering* release of elders.
“Reformers.” Not some monolith. Defenders, crime victims & survivor groups, faith organizations, prosecutors, police, & judges, LGBTQ groups, the communities devastated by these laws. And “law enforcement” is *always* at the table. But their “ideas” are driven by fear not reason.
“Sprung.” @nypost attacks commonsense reforms, claiming lawmakers ignored everyone. Wrong: conservative TX prosecutors & judges literally flew to NY to implore NY to follow their lead. Bail changes have worked in NJ. All violent felonies eligible for bail except 2 w/o violence.
“Look carefully.” Not too much to ask. What lawmakers did. For years. Studied. Looked at experiences in other states. Listened to all sides. Considered. Did what was right. Not just for “one part of the equation.” More than basic fairness: Increases safety. Saves taxpayer money.
“Focused exclusively on one side.” This burns me up. @nypost, prosecutors & police want you to believe that “reformers” only care about “getting people out,” while they care for public safety. Their “ideas” don’t do that. Ours do. Criminalization enhances likelihood of rearrest.
