Miami police fired at least 200 rounds into a UPS truck in a shootout on a highway with 2 people who had hijacked it after an attempted robbery earlier today.

The 2 people, the driver who they had taken hostage, and an innocent bystander were all killed.
Video appears to show police using civilian cars as shields.

@nytimes PS. I should have worded this better - using "innocent" as an adjective to describe others suggests that the 2 people understood to have hijacked the truck somehow deserved to be shot & killed. We don't live in a police state where cops can summarily execute people without trial.

@monaeltahawy Just to clarify, reading the comments, I was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up there. I moved to NYC as an adult and have lived here my entire adult life. My family live in Australia and I visit often.
@monaeltahawy I don't think there is less racism and misogyny in the US. I think the mainstream discourse around these topics is, for want of a better word, more sophisticated and there is generally more awareness of things like cultural appropriation.

Meanwhile McKinsey is quick to defend study now by pointing out that "morale among corrections staff assigned to the Restart units improved." Because, major priority.
Also, @propublica, "people who are incarcerated," not "the inmates."

NYC Correction Officers' Benevolent Association, you can tweet out this disingenuous statement a million times. It doesn't change the facts.

Four Rikers guards watched a child, Nicholas Feliciano, hang himself in a cell. One entered the cell, saw him, did nothing and walked out.
In saying the guards didn't "stand there" and watch Nicholas Feliciano attempt suicide, you are clearly trying to obfuscate the truth, because, no, they didn't stand there - they watched it on video monitor.

And we know this because another video monitor shows them doing it.
I know your officers have prevented suicides in other cases, because I have had people I represent attempt suicide at Rikers.

That doesn't mean these guards didn't do what they are accused of doing here.

Battle at the PolyU now happening along Cheong Wan Road above the cross harbour tunnel, while on the other end of the road near the intersection of Chatham Road S where the water cannon was at, things remain in a standstill.
Entered the school for a tour, where all sorts of materials and utilities are being put to use, such as the gymnasium mat.
People have donated all sorts of supplies as wel. Here’s a first-aider finding water boots of the right size. Raincoats, gas masks and other protective gear were being handed out. One makes announcement remaining press not to livestream on campus.

Spread word: my student & friend #Tavares Calloway was coerced to confess to 5 murders after #Miami police told him his own family was in immediate danger unless he falsely confessed to help them flush out the real killer. He was sentenced to die. docs.google.com/document/d/e/2…
#Tavares was 19 when 11 officers interrogated him for 18 hours w/o an attorney present. Police admitted to repeatedly lying to him, saying they'd found his DNA/fingerprints at the scene.

In fact, NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OR EYEWITNESS ties him to the crime.
The SOLE EVIDENCE against #Tavares is a confession he signed when police told him his family was in grave & imminent danger. After 18 hrs of questioning, police knew he was protective of his family & deeply devout.
