Finally. A smart piece on the real impact of Apple leading industry on privacy and why new laws may force Google to actually care about users thereby raising all boats for those who respect and provide real value to users. /1
Only thing missing in piece is that Google and Facebook have also lost their ability to track users across the web in many cases due to Apple’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention. This is also a good outcome. /2
Often in reports like this and with ad tech lobby you’ll see intentional confusion as if limitations of tracking users across the web impacts all “targeting” rather than a very narrow type of surveillance which has unfortunately become the norm and the source of the backlash. /3
There are many ways in which to provide ad targeting, still way more advanced than offline media, that can happen and are in line with consumer expectations but don’t require allowing thousands of companies to mine browsing history across the web and our now mobile lives./4
ps I’ve held off criticizing Criteo specifically over the years as they’ve battled with tech, $ and PR to keep their ability to track users alive. This is a company almost no user probably even knows exists. Yet they argue tracking prevention reduces “choice.” 😂
