This is an exceptionally important article about @google and health care data being provided by @Ascensionorg, without patient or doctor knowledge. So do we, as a society care – what protections are there? @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro wsj.com/articles/googl… @WSJ
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ Why was the project begun in secret? Especially given #privacy issues? 'Google began Project Nightingale in secret last year w/St. Louis-based Ascension, a Catholic chain of 2,600 hospitals, doctors’ offices and other facilities, w/data sharing accelerating since summer.’ @WSJ
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ According to @WSJ: "Neither patients nor doctors have been notified. At least 150 Google employees already have access to much of the data on tens of millions of patients, according to person familiar w/the matter and the documents.” Do why not notify everyone before you start?
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ "Google co-founder Larry Page, in a 2014 interview, suggested that patients worried about the #privacy of their medical records were too cautious.” Is that his call? @ePatientDave @BraveBosom @TheLizArmy @MarilynMann @HugoOC @AmyPricePhD #bigdata #digitalhealth @WSJ
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ @ePatientDave @BraveBosom @TheLizArmy @MarilynMann @HugoOC @AmyPricePhD I want data from patients to be used to accelerate progress, bring faster breakthroughs. But I am wondering if it is possible to do this with patients, or at least out in the open, with a society-wide dialogue about rules that promote progress, partnership, and privacy.
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ @ePatientDave @BraveBosom @TheLizArmy @MarilynMann @HugoOC @AmyPricePhD I want the smartest people working hard on data streams from healthcare to improve evidence and decisions… so how we best extract the value from data in ways that are respectful of patients and their data. How to leverage the opportunity and promote high ethical standards?
@Google @Ascensionorg @ChrisMurphyCT @SenBlumenthal @rosadelauro @WSJ @ePatientDave @BraveBosom @TheLizArmy @MarilynMann @HugoOC @AmyPricePhD Is the idea of work with the digital data in health care always at odds with respecting patients and their privacy and preferences. I really think we can find a new way of engagement that can align our aims and not leave them in opposition. Partnership and transparency are key.
