1. Dear Mr Johnson, I understand you keep saying “Let’s Get Brexit Done”, but I think there has got to be a question asked about that...

2. You see, after people voted on the referendum you claimed that both sides had said that “leaving the customs union & single market”

3. Now, the problem with that is that Remain documentation definitely indicated the Norway model was a possible outcome.
4. And the one Single Market statement on the Vote Leave trade website page is a quote from Tony Blair that when you click through is the ex Prime minister talking about the Norway model.

The Vote Leave website asked everybody to share a meme of that quote on Facebook.
5. Then let’s look at what David Cameron said. At the very start he talked about negotiating full access to the Single Market, full access is only possible through membership, or essentially a complete copy, of the EEA agreement.
6. And then: “You can have situation like Norway”.
7. Then let’s consider that some people campaigning for Leave were arguing that the Single Market was just a free trade zone and we would be in it.
8. David Cameron again: “We’d have to accept free movement if we were in the position of Norway”.
9. “If, for instance, if we were to leave and join with a country like Norway, they have a deal so they do get access to that Single Market”.
10. Then of course the government released a document of the alternative options if there was a vote to leave. Including Norway.
11. Or as you, Mr Johnson said: “If you vote to leave, all your options are good.”
12. And you could strike a deal like Wolfgang Schäuble had said on the same show, the deal being membership of the Single Market.
13. Back to David Cameron: “Now Norway is one example of a country we could follow”.
14. Then George Osborne: “You would have free movement of people, as I say, if you did the type of deal that Switzerland does, or Norway does”.
15. “As the government we’ve set out an Alternatives paper, so we’ve looked at whether you could stay in the Single Market and keep that access.”
16. “Here’s the absolutely key choice, if we went for a deal like Norway which is out of the European Union but almost a full member of the Single Market.”
17. David Cameron referring back to the alternatives paper for what will be looked at if there is a vote to leave: “the government have set out an alternatives paper setting out what some of the alternatives are.”
18. Then of course came the long term economic analysis from the treasury which says it is widely accepted a new relationship would be based on one of a number of models, including the Norway model.
19. Back to George Osborne talking about the options after a vote to leave including the Norway model: “There’s seeking membership of the European Economic Area”.
20. Michael Gove gave his major speech, and Laura Kuenssberg asked him directly about the Single Market and concluded from his answer that he had ruled out staying out of it.

21. Moving on to Dominic Raab: “Look at the options being put out there: Swiss; Norwegian; Turkish”.
22. Back to David Cameron: “If we chose the Norway option, and said we’re going to stay in the Single Market because it’s so important for our jobs”.
23. David Cameron again: “Either you say, we want as full access to the Single Market as possible, so we’ll have a deal like Norway”.
24. George Osborne when discussing the cost of leaving the EU points out that: “if we leave the Single Market, actually our analysis says we’ll be worse off than that”.
25. David Cameron again on the wide leave campaigns not agreeing: “Some of them say we’d keep full access to the EU Single Market”.
26. George Osborn discussing the different options that the UK may seek “Whether it becomes a member of the EEA”.
27. From VoteLeave HQ, David Owen on the negotiations “We don’t know what is going to be the response of the European Single Market, the EEA”.
28. David Cameron being asked about the EEA and saying “that is an opportunity that Britain could choose”.
29. Alex Salmond: “If the UK negotiated an Economic Area agreement like Norway”.
30. And by this time, the public are already voting.
31. Not that it ends there, George Osborne: “You also have a situation if we leave the European Union that we would be there begging to be back into the Single Market”.
32. Tony Blair: “If we wanted to protect the jobs and so on in Northern Ireland, then we’d be in the same position as Norway has been.”
33. Nicola Sturgeon “Boris says we’ll stay in the Single Market” and the leave campaign “Sometimes say it will be like Norway”.
34. Back to George Osborne releasing a Brexit Budget which specifies the EEA as a possible outcome for a vote to leave.

One of his highest profile interventions in the campaign.
35. Now if everybody knew what was going on with the Single Market, it’s funny that business didn’t know we were leaving.
36. Chris Grayling certainly didn’t seem to know if we were leaving the Single Market, he was asked three times, and three times he failed to answer.
37. David Cameron didn’t seem to know we had to leave the Single Market.
38. Vote Leave didn’t seem to know we’d be leaving the Single Market, they renamed themselves Change Britain and designed a questionnaire to poll people to find out if they wanted to stay in the Customs Union or the Single Market, which seems incredibly redundant otherwise.
39. Owen Paterson certainly seemed to think the immigration that Vote Leave argued for was entirely consistent with Article 112 of the EEA, and he couldn’t see why we could have it like Liechtenstein does.
40. And if it was clear we were leaving the Customs Union, why couldn’t you answer that question definitively after the vote?
41. Also, if it was clear we were leaving the Single Market, why couldn’t you answer that question either?
42. That’s the problem, Mr Johnson. Here you chose to selectively cite what each side said, and in doing so, you demonstrated that you were willing to pervert the course of our democracy.

43. It should concern everybody that a future Prime Minister would be prepared to treat the electorate with such contempt, and so the question I alluded to at the start must be asked:

Will you selectively employ history for your own political ends again?
44. You should probably consider answering that.

Thanks,
Steve.

P.S. Have you noticed David Cameron’s description of going to the Norway model and going to the Canadian model are identical?

That's just an accident waiting to happen!
