What the heck did Bill Barr just do?

The big headline yesterday was that the Department of Justice Inspector General announced that the FBI was fully justified in its criminal investigation of the Donald Trump 2016 campaign
meaning Attorney General Bill Barr utterly failed at his task of getting the IG to falsely claim that Trump was maliciously sabotaged by the FBI. But in a profoundly surreal twist, Barr also did something that was frankly just plain weird.
the “details” involved Ivanka Trump once having tried to hire Christopher Steele to work for the Trump Organization several years ago, and the two of them having since maintained a personal relationship. Wait, what?
But why on earth would Bill Barr have decided to make this information public, after the DOJ IG decided to redact it?
To be clear, Bill Barr just outed the fact that Trump-Russia dossier author Christopher Steele is apparently a longtime associate of the Trump family.
This shatters Donald Trump’s argument that Steele was some kind of anti-Trump crusader who went overboard with his dossier because he was trying to take the Trump campaign down.
Why would Barr of all people put this information out there for public consumption? It hurts Donald Trump, and while it may be harmless with regard to Ivanka, we don’t imagine she wants these kinds of details about herself out there.
When something happens like this that makes no sense on any level, it usually turns out that there was far more to it than we knew – and it usually ends up being important later. There isn’t much point in trying to guess what’s really going on with this Barr-Steele-Ivanka thing
, but stick a pin in it, because we suspect we’ll be hearing about it again down the road.

Another Justice Department inspector general report.

The report disputed GOP claims that a “dossier” of salacious material originally commissioned by Democrats triggered the Russia investigation and that the FBI spied on the Trump campaign.
but a 2018 House Democratic memo had asserted the FBI did not “abuse” the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) process or “omit material information.”
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) tweeted: “The IG report proves Obama officials abused their FISA power to trigger an investigation into @realDonaldTrump’s campaign.” (The report does not say the FISA abuse triggered the investigation, or that Obama officials opened it.)

Democrats unveiled Monday a more coordinated effort to argue that if they don’t impeach Trump now, he’ll ask another country to interfere in some way to help his reelection.
They pointed to Trump personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani’s traveling to Ukraine last week to argue Trump may be doing it again. “The integrity of our next election is at stake. Nothing could be more urgent,” said Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.).
When Republicans’ counsel Stephen Castor did talk about substance, he didn’t have a lot of factual information to work with:To defend Trump, he lifted up a conspiracy theory that Ukraine meddled in the election.

The Department of Justice Inspector General report shows there was a proper predicate for the FBI to investigate Russia’s malign influence on the 2016 election and contacts with the Trump campaign.
That puts to rest President Trump’s accusations of a deep state conspiracy, and no amount of spin from Attorney General Barr, the White House, or congressional Republicans can change that. Barr’s decision to question the report in the media says a lot about Attorney General Barr.
The Inspector General is a defender against political influence over law enforcement—a regrettable tendency under Attorney General Barr. I hope the Inspector General turns his attention to other allegations of politically motivated investigations by this administration.

The IG's report will be released on Monday, December 9.
