This isn’t the point being made, certainly not by me. Labour didn’t lose because of people on Twitter, Labour lost because they had a mobilised, heavily-online membership backing a deeply unpopular candidate.
Rather than choosing to fairly address his unpopularity, Labour outriders thought they could bully and bluster their way through it, including by attacking the credibility and integrity of those who were reporting on how unpopular he was with the electorate.
It became a toxic mess, and it’s little wonder journalists at the receiving end of this treatment feel their reporting has been vindicated. This attitude also treats the electorate with sheer contempt, the media didn’t fabricate videos of Corbyn calling terrorist groups ‘friends’
The media published those videos, but the electorate is more than capable of making up their own minds about what they think of his record and behaviour.
The contempt is felt when people whose entire strategy was to attack, mock, gaslight and intimidate anyone who tried to have a reasonable discussion about these issues, suddenly think that their behaviour played no part in this loss.
People didn’t vote against Labour because of your shitposting tweets, your shitposting tweets prevented you and others from seeing that people wanted to vote against Labour.
The ‘Corbyn sympathises with terrorists’ line cut through to vast swathes of the electorate, not because it was a lie fabricated by the media, but because it was an accurate depiction of his record that even his most vocal defenders had no answer to or excuse for.
It was a failure of not just your messaging, but also your strategy. And, to compound the situation, instead of honestly reflecting on his flaws and trying to build an electoral coalition around him, instead you pursued a campaign to purge all disbelievers from the movement.
In short, Labour outriders didn’t lose the election for Corbyn, but they did provide enough cover for the project to prevent people from seeing how unpopular it was.
The record needs to be set straight, Novara Media made themselves household names appearing on mainstream broadcasters regularly. They have been given the largest platforms possible and the public just didn’t want to vote for your project. Maybe it’s time to own your part in this
I mean, just look. Look at how someone was treated for doing their job correctly.
