It is very easy and enjoyable to start trees from seed. Here is a mini forest of American Persimmons that I started from seed a few years ago. #Permaculture #TreeCrops
I find that most tree seedlings are very tolerant of growing in a crowded setting for their first and sometimes into their second year.
Here is a picture of the Persimmon seedlings after they had gone dormant by the following fall. Look how well they did, most are close to 12 inches tall.
Here is the Persimmon variety called Prok. In the fall I remove all the soil from the seedlings, tie them into bundles and bury them in a garden on the north side of the house. Being out of the sun protects them from the winter sun which can desiccate them.
The following spring I have bare root seedlings that I can plant directly where they are to grow or pot them up to give away to friends.
Here is a 1/4 of a pound of American Persimmon seeds from grafted selections which I will plant next spring.
I'm very excited about getting hybrid Persimmon seed from the cross of Diospyros virginiana and Diospyros kaki. Resulting trees won't be hardy enough for Vermont so they will be planted in Massachusetts.
