I’ve now had 4 emails inviting me to return to @UKLabour, 3 from organisations that think I ought to help fight to clear out the shit in the stables, and 1 that seems to think Labour won the argument.
Some thoughts: /
This was an abusive relationship. It is something I see professionally. It had a number of the markers of such relationships, particularly the abuse that came the way of anyone who tried to point out the bullying and the unfairness.
Abusive relationships work by exploiting the /
love genuinely felt by one party. The other party only wants the public verification, and private servitude. They are never interested in an equal relationship, or a fair one.
Such relationships can occasionally be turned around, but it needs to start with the abuser /
acknowledging that they have abused the love and trust of the other party. That cannot be forced, and it must not be faked. Without that acknowledgement, as we see depressingly often, the abused party believes everything will change – because that is what they truly want to /
believe. So they return, only to be further abused.
In terms of @UKLabour, there is a coterie around the leader that does not believe they are an abuser, and does not believe they have abused anybody. They led Labour to this defeat, and they will never accept they have done /
anything wrong.
While they remain in control, Labour is an abusive party to choose, & returning to it would be self harming fully.
The only group of people who can really move this relationship forward is the PLP. It needs to do 2 things. First it must demonstrate it understands/
that the behaviour it has condoned – by not speaking out – is abusive & has caused harm.
Secondly it must act.
How it does these things isn’t for me.
When both things have happened – if they ever do – there can be a serious conversation about returning. Before that it can’t be.
