I have deep ties to Michigan.
I also have a FOIA lawsuit pending against @UMich to unseal the #TantonPapers.

U of M wanted nearly $6400 to go through 11 boxes, and another $6400 after they were done. They also wanted 18 months to do it.

That's why this bill is so important.

Michigan can't be a "basement dweller" when it comes to transparency.

I've been fighting to unseal the #TantonPapers, which will shed light on the origins of the anti-immigrant movement that's infected the current White House, for 3 years.
It's time to overhaul Michigan's FOIA laws.

And prevent the state from being able to contract around transparency by entering into mysterious secret agreements with shady individuals.

Jerry Kammer's op-ed in Thursday's @nytimes calling for restriction on immigration as a “liberal” is nothing but camouflaged white nationalism.

How could they fall for it? Well, Kammer is part of the #TantonNetwork and fooling people is what they do.

That they fell for publishing this drivel days before the #WomensMarch and #MartinLutherKingJrDay shows how pervasively the white nationalist movement has infiltrated both our government and our immigration discourse.
The #TantonNetwork can't say they want to enhance inequality. So they camouflage, adopting arguments of economic justice (who will protect American workers?), environmental justice (we must have (certain) population(s) controlled), and the old go-to: appeals to law and order.

I'm going to say it again.

I'm sick of the term "border security." It means nothing but militarization.

A border is a national asset. Used wisely, it enhances prosperity. Otherwise, it's a liability.

The most "secure" border is one that doesn't need a wall.

#Rethink
It is time for all of us to push back against this contrived political term. A Newspeak term coopted to limit debate, and enhances neither prosperity nor security.

We've tried it their way for years, and this is where we are. No: there's a better way.
And it starts by rejecting the framework created by those who don't share our vision of an inclusive America.

Looking at you, FAIR, CIS, NumbersUSA, IRLI, PFIR. The #TantonNetwork. (Don't know about it? Well, it's responsible for all this horror.)

White nationalists mourn the passing of their godfather, architect of the anti-immigrant movement, the guy who might as well have told Stephen Miller how to make America white again.

I've been fighting to unseal the #TantonPapers for 3 years. What don't they want us to see?
But there is some good news. Because Tanton died in July - the quarterly hate rag he launched called "The Social Contract" comes to an end.

That's one less white nationalist mouthpiece out there. Of course, one could argue it accomplished its purpose.
That being the creation of anti-immigrant language that Tanton Network people could use to push policies like the #MuslimBan, ramped up #ICERaids, criminalization of immigrants, #MPP, and the rest of the Hate Torrent spewing out of the White House.

Tanton Network infested it.

Earlier this year, right after AG Barr released his memo characterizing Mueller's report, I started filing #FOIA requests for primary source documents that were used to draft the report as well as other underlying documents amassed by Mueller's probe

Then after Mueller's report was released, I filed dozens more #FOIA requests for additional documents. The footnotes in the report made clear that these primary source documents could further flesh out the narrative about 2016/obstruction.

I also wanted to gain access to the documents that would shed light on how Mueller came to issue the unprecedented statement about the story @a_cormier_ and I published about Cohen being directed to lie to Congress by Trump. So I filed another #FOIA request.

Not sure if anyone is aware, but for more than two years, I//@BuzzFeedNews /@_rshapiro have had a #FOIA lawsuit against multiple intel agencies for documents on their assertions that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential campaign/collusion. 1/
The agencies identified thousands of pages of documents and withheld the vast majority on national security grounds. Still, some were released and we are the only ones who have been successful in prying loose some of these records via #FOIA. 2/
So in light on the 4-page Barr memo characterizing the Mueller report (which we still haven't seen) I am reupping some of the stories I wrote from the cache of #FOIA docs on Russia interference in the 2016 campaign. These documents are from DHS, CIA, FBI, ODNI and State Dept. 3/
