1/ Smoking and carcinoma of the lung
Doll and Hill (1950)

Established the link between smoking and cancer in 1950. STILL our biggest public health problem in 2020.

2/ Sick Individuals and sick populations
Geoffrey Rose (1985)

Still the best statement I know of how to do good public health. Should be compulsory reading for health ministers!

3/ The environment and disease: association or causation
Austin Bradford Hill (1965)

This is the best guide to distinguishing association and causation - perennial problem in all epidemiology and social science.

4/ The inverse Care Law
Julian Tudor Hart (1971)

Sadly, the Law is still very much in operation. Those who need it most, have worst healthcare.

Established the idea of a social gradient as a core part of modern public health.

W Robinson (1950)

First demonstration of the ecological. Still very much a live problem in epidemiology. Associations we see at the level of place can be misleading.

Recently discovered this. Incredibly prescient, one of the best statements I've read of a social determinants approach to public health.

E Evans-Pritchard (1937)

Incredible insights into how humans make sense of a world which includes illness and death. @muirgray once asked me my favourite ethnography. This is it.

1/ Do read more popular writing, and then as @SarahEBond has said, try to imitate that style with citation habits of scholars. You are likely a scholar because you are good a learning things...so learn from the best writers out there!
@Carleton_PW @SarahEBond 2/ Do identify which publics you want to reach. Perhaps there are conversations you what to shift or communities you want to reach/advocate for? Who you want to speak to will determine where you want to pitch.

Okay so here is a list of books that I think black women should read.
I have spent the last year strictly reading about black women and I noticed a lot of books that represent us are depressing as fuck. They tell our stories but they have a way of leaving you bleak.

The books I picked are full of healing, laughter and peace. Must reads.
I am not crazy about biographies because people love to drag their stories but this book is heaven sent. A book every brown skin girl should read. It's funny, it teaches you, reminds you of your past and it heals you. You won't skip a single word. Give it to every woman.
