2. Brexit marks the end, not just of a four-year political struggle, but of an entire phase of British history: half a century in which Britain was fundamentally reshaped by its membership of the European bloc.
3. From 1961 to 2016, every British government - whether Labour or Conservative - thought that Britain should be inside the European bloc. Yet ministers have shown little understanding of why Britain joined, or of the strategic dilemmas to which membership became the answer.

@BorisJohnson @NewStatesman In Johnson's rather hazy vision of British history, a coercive military empire is recast as a champion of “free trade”, establishing entrepreneurialism, rather than empire, as the golden thread between past & present. That teaches the dangerous lesson that "nothing has changed".
@BorisJohnson @NewStatesman The classic example of this is Liam Fox, who memorably told a gathering of Commonwealth Ministers in 2017 that what bound them all together was their shared history of free trade.

The Supreme Court, it appears, is to be punished for rolling back the unlawful suspension of Parliament. There is always scope for reform in our judicial arrangements, but we should be wary of constitutional changes that are intended *simply* to remove checks on govt. [THREAD]
2. Referencing the prorogation, @SuellaBraverman calls in this clip for "judicial deference", in which courts "stay out of politics": "they’re not elected, they’re not accountable to the public & it’s for politicians to make political decisions". There are several problems here.
@SuellaBraverman 3. When Boris Johnson prorogued Parliament, he had been elected by no one except his own party activists. The only democratic body to which he was accountable was Parliament, which he was suspending. "Politicians" cannot "make political decisions" if Parlt is not allowed to sit.

Baroness Warsi was Tory Chairman for this, Theresa May Government. Her comment, (2), was made LAST SUNDAY, her other quote (3) was from 2016.

Interesting filing in case against Internet Research Agency/Concord Mgmt (h/t @josh_emerson), in which Concord tries to argue that statements in the Mueller report & by AG Barr are prejudicial against Concord's defense by labeling IRA a Russian govt op /1

Judge largely not having it. Concord asks for transcripts/details of sealed hearing to be released, clearly believing those details will help them make the case they are not "information warfare" or a govt operation. Judge gives prosecution time to respond/suggest redaction. /2

Whew! So many sleepless nights to respond to the governments pathetic counter to our Aadhaar writ petition. Seeking damages for breach of privacy. Our rejoinder came to 162 pages! To respond to each repetitive long winded point of the govt! Ironical that we call this a "Brief"!
1. All the government says in nearly 200 paras of theirs is that their "security" systems are "robust". And that breaches have not been proved. The same thing. Over and over again. Ad nauseam. And that the SC in Puttuswamy already decided the issue.
2. This, when the SC itself in Puttuswamy clearly makes a reference to my writ petition in the Delhi high court and says that they are leaving this issue open.
