@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 Scientists framing models of sex are all working from the same dataset. Scientists saying ‘sex is a spectrum’ do not have any special understanding unavailable to those who disagree with this framing.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 I disagree with the novel interpretation of sex as a spectrum. The standard binary framing has far more use and predictive power as a model. The exceptions utilised by Spectrummers (not a word) are all understood perfectly well within the standard binary model.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 I do not believe it is good science to reject a model that applies to nearly all complex life on earth, to account for rare exceptions.

Exceptions that are entirely predictable within the standard binary model.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 No scientist looks at a dataset of 4999 pieces of information and adapts a well-understood model to account for the sole exception. Especially when the scientist would have predicted that exception would arise, given their understanding.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 The utility of the ‘sex is a spectrum’ model is, as far as I can see, limited to inclusion of these rare exceptional people. I understand the social desire, driven by empathy, to do so.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 But it’s a terrible model.

It isn’t useful to describe nearly 100% of the dataset.

It has no predictive power. If sex is a spectrum, one would not be able to predict what the sex of any fertilised zygote would be, or what the anatomy of the individual is likely to be.
@SilvieKilgallon @Woodywing @MartianOrthodox @happlebio @metaburbia @ShadowC5 @macohibs @RebeccaRHelm @Lizzy_Lang7 It therefore lacks explanatory power. It is a series of descriptions, not principles.

Conversation here. Some thoughts I’ve been mulling over for a few days. Happy to discuss.
