Reading the decade in reviews published this week, I've been reflecting on the last 10 years myself. It started off the back of all my gear getting stolen on an Indian train, saw moves across 3 continents, and is ending with the world seemingly intent on self imploding.(thread)
In 2010, @ania_gan and I traveled to Haiti in the wake of the 7.0 quake, where we saw a nation recovering its devastation while its most vulnerable were exploited by and preyed on in the name of "charity"
In 2011, I moved to kingdom of Bhutan for two years, where I documented how the government’s "gross national happiness" philosophy + ecotourism policy functioned alongside -- and sometimes against -- the reality of a country experiencing rapid modernization
In 2012, I briefly swapped my Himalayan views for a chance to visit Alaska's Denali before heading back to the land of the blue poppies
In 2013, I moved to Cambodia, where I took the reigns on the photo desk from @willbaxterphoto @phnompenhpost. The country was on the precipice of one-man rule and its health system struggling to deal with a high incidence of mental disorders, a vestige of the Khmer Rouge regime
In 2014, I left Asia for the UK and Ireland, where I met @GlenBMulcahy who gave me my first training in #mojo and encouraged me on my quest to shoot video on my DSLR
In 2015, I completed a masters at @GoldsmithsUoL where my final project, a web doc on medicinal cannabis users in the UK, won a @gdnstudentmedia award
In 2016, after another few months in Bhutan via the Philippines, I settled back in Ireland where I began work on a project about the country's 8th amendment (essentially a ban on abortion.) A few months later, @blathnaidhealy took a chance on me, hiring me at CNN
In 2017, I reported on the sustained hold of Turkey's strongman, the rejection of the far-right surge in France, anti-capitalist demos in Hamburg, the quake that tore through parts of Mexico and the lives -- and deaths -- of two American men who traveled to Syria to fight ISIS.
Last year, I reported on urban decay in a Moscow suburb and Russian rap, allegations of state-sponsored harassment, censorship and violence in Rwanda with @edwardkiernan, and stood in Dublin Castle as activists celebrated the repeal of the 8th amendment
This year, I mapped the rise of “pro-family" rhetoric on women's reproductive rights in Italy with @muhammadakd, hate crime in Ireland, and the survivors of Ireland's notorious mother and baby homes.
The rise of dictators among our democracies and many other worrying global trends this decade have been troubling to experience and extraordinary report on. But I have pause for optimism, as I've ended this year anew. I'm now a mom.
