Census Bureau today released population estimates for the nation and states as of July 1, 2019: census.gov/data/tables/ti…

U.S. population estimate 328.2 million, up just 0.5%/1.55 million from 326.7 million on July 1, 2018 docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d… 1/
Idaho (1.787m), the fastest-growing state in percentage point terms (2.1%) from 2018-2019, on pace in 2020 Census to overtake West Virginia (1.792m), which lost population at largest rate (-0.7%) among the 50 states

Idaho now has 2 congressional districts, West Virginia 3.

Ten states lost population in the year ended July 1, 2019 per @uscensusbureau estimate:

@uscensusbureau Montana, which overtook Rhode Island in the 2018 estimate, extended its lead over the Ocean State in the 2019 estimate. Montana now has 1 district, Rhode Island 2. Montana projected to get 2nd seat in 2020 reapportionment after census. 4/
@uscensusbureau California still tops by far at 39.5 million, though it grew by just 50,635/0.1 percent during year.

11 states including Utah (+52,408) & Nevada (+52,815) had larger net population gain than California during the year, and CA's 0.1% growth rate ranked 35th out of 50 states. 5/
@uscensusbureau Tennessee is growing faster than most states including Massachusetts, which TN is very close to eclipsing in population 6/
@uscensusbureau Colorado soon to overtake Wisconsin. 7/
@uscensusbureau Nevada, which topped the 3 million population mark in the 2018 estimate, close to eclipsing Iowa. 8/
@uscensusbureau Reapportionment of the 435 U.S. House seats will be conducted and released in late 2020 (by Dec. 31, 2020), using official 2020 Census state population counts and a formula known as the "method of equal proportions":
census.gov/population/app… 9/
@uscensusbureau Number of House seats capped by law at 435 (for more than a century!). Reapportionment a zero-sum game: faster-growing states will gain congressional districts (and electoral votes) at the expense of states that grow more slowly or lose population

@uscensusbureau The new population estimates underscore decades-long trend of South/West growing faster than other regions:

South/West: +1,523,463 from 7-1-2018 to 7-1-2019
Northeast/Midwest: +28,559

h/t @uscensusbureau 11/11
@uscensusbureau New York, which was 577,000 more populous than Florida as of the 2010 Census, now more than 2 million behind the Sunshine State. 12/12
