It's the last day of 2019 -- my last chance to share a thread of pieces that you should definitely check out from the past year. Here, ordered only by my memory, are my favourite pieces from 2019.
1. Back in March, I was one of very few people writing about the fact that the Liberals chose policing and militarization as their tools to manage migration -- a stark break from their 2015 rhetoric washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
2. In the summer, I tried to make the connection between the proliferation of mass murder and how it's terrorist violence that helps makes fascism possible nationalobserver.com/2019/08/06/opi…
3. Similarly, social media is also making fascism more popular too -- my reflection on the 30th anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre nationalobserver.com/2019/12/05/opi…
4. In a rare moment of optimism, I had hopped that the Christchurch shooting would change things. While it seems to have in NZ, the rest of the West has not taken gun violence more seriously ... nationalobserver.com/2019/03/20/opi…
5. For my first piece about hockey e-v-e-r, I wrote about how we outsource our collective identity to a sport that struggles with racism, misogyny and class the same way that Canada does washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/…
6. I wrote a basic reminder that we could make university free, if we wanted to nationalobserver.com/2019/07/10/opi…
7. I wrote about how the election went in Quebec ... nationalobserver.com/2019/10/22/ana…
8. I reminded folks that Maxime Bernier's election loss doesn't mean that his racist movement is dead nationalobserver.com/2019/08/22/opi…
9. I wrote about Elections Canada's interpretation of new election laws showed that free speech is under attack in our partisan politics nationalobserver.com/2019/08/22/opi…
10. And ... a longer piece for @thenation on Quebec's Bill 21 -- the religious symbols ban -- and how the only way to defeat it is in the streets (and not in the courts) thenation.com/article/quebec…

@thenation Thanks to everyone for your support this past year. Looking forward to kicking even more ass, taking more prisoners and smashing brains in 2020 <3 <3
@thenation bah -- here's the Bernier link corrected nationalobserver.com/2019/10/29/opi…
